I am a graduate of Salem State University's Cartography and GIS program, finishing my bachelor's degree in 2022 and my master's degree in 2023. I have been the GIS coordinator for the city of Newport, RI for the past 10 months. My main responsibilities are keeping the city's parcel information up to date and making sure the city's interactive map is up and running. I am responsible for collecting new data for the city such as utility poles, pavement markings, and traffic signage, among other things. I am currently working with the Harbormaster to create a map for the harbor guide that will be given to boaters when they stay in town. I'm trying to get a drone for the city so that we can do before and after pictures for storms and have recent aerial images for some of Newport's larger, more famous attractions. The city has experienced several large storms that have caused some heavy damage to beaches and roadways that run along the seashore. Having recent aerial images would give the planning department a better understanding of how the city's land is currently being utilized and where they can make beneficial changes.
